Nimrud archaeological site
Nimrud was an ancient Assyrian city 30 km south of present day Mosul and 10 km north of the confluence of the Tigris River. The city was inhabited around 1350-610 BC. It is a large city with a total area of about 360 hectares. The name Nimrod dates back to the mid-18th century and in the mid-19th century the name Kalkhu was suggested.
