Portrait of Catherine de Medicis dressed as a nun
The French monarchy, which remained faithful to Catholicism, found itself torn between Catholics and Protestants in the midst of the Wars of Religion. Queen Catherine de Medicis, wife and widow of King Henry II, was regent during the minority of her son Charles IX. She tried to find ways of pacifying the kingdom, but failed to achieve lasting peace.
