Der silberne Becher stammt ursprünglich aus dem Rathaus der Stadt Lahr. Solche Ratsbecher waren im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert in vielen Orten verbreitet. Zunächst hatten sie die schlichte Form eines fast zylindrischen Bechers. Seit dem frühen 18. Jahrhundert wurde unter französischem Einfluss aber eine elegantere Form bevorzugt.
