Capstan - 17th century
A capstan was used to hoist a cannon up the slopes of the walls of a fortress. Typically, a 24-pound cannon weighs 3000 kg and at least 4 men were needed to get the cannon up the slope. The design of the capstan is taken from "Mémoires d’artillerie" by Surirey de Saint Remy, the French “lieutenant du Grand-Maître d’artillerie de France” and adapted for technical inconsistencies.
