Funchal, Capital of Madeira
Funchal is the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira. When Portuguese sailors discovered the Atlantic island in 1419, they found an unusual amount of wild fennel. That's where the name Funchal comes from: "funcho" means fennel in Portuguese.
