Uez skilfully captures the fine, transparent materiality of the white dress (chemise) in this portrait. The young woman’s hair is styled in ringlets popular in the Biedermeier era. Was the portrait meant to commemorate a special occasion? The museum bought the painting in 1918 from the historian Peter Paul Albert, who was the city archivist in Freiburg at the time.
