This painting was falsely attributed to Franz Xaver Winterhalter for many years. However, upon examination of the painterly structure and the clearly legible signature (“H. Winterhalter”), this would suggest that it is one of Hermann Winterhalter’s compositions. Hermann Winterhalter himself had never been to Italy and had most likely drawn inspiration from the motifs in his brother’s work
