Guanyin
The earthenware figure is clearly based on a bronze model, such as the one alongside. The bronze figure dates from the early days of Buddhist sculpture in China. Buddhism had spread to the region a few centuries earlier, from Gandhara, an ancient kingdom in what is now Pakistan. The Gandhara influence is still evident in the robe’s fine, even drapery folds.
