The Artist and his Family
Chodowiecki’s mother had asked her son for a portrait of his children. The etching he made for her became a classic depiction of middle-class life around 1770. The intimate family group is gathered together in this harmonious scene. The father works, two children look at pictures and draw, while two others watch. They are supervised by their mother, rather than a governess.
