Hermann und Dorothea

The oil study shows a scene from the eighth canto ("Melpomene") of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Hermann and Dorothea". As the two descend the steps in the dark, Dorothea twists her foot and Hermann reaches out his arm to support her. Ramberg illustrated the epic in Munich in the 1860s.
